Acupuncture needles inserted beneath the surface of the skin restores the circulation of healing elements, alleviates pain, reduces inflammation and promotes healing by activating our parasympathetic nervous system. This aspect of our nervous system corresponds to our ability to rest, restore, replenish and regulate, our yin element in Eastern medicine.

Massage, acupressure, cupping and warm stones may be used independently or in conjunction with acupuncture [termed acussage] to relax our sympathetic nervous system. This component of our nervous system relates to our inborn survival mode: to take flight, fight or freeze. In Eastern medicine the innate stress response would be considered our yang aspect. Studies have shown that the prolonged release of stress-related hormones adversely affects our health and wellbeing.

When our ability to move and circulate is compromised we may develop internal blockages. Blood, Qi, food, thoughts and emotions move in, out and around our body. Stagnation of any of these elements may also lead to inflammation similar to the way heat is generated in a compost. Acupuncture serves to restore the free flow of Qi and all its healing elements.
